Prediabetes is a health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough to be diagnosed as Type 2 Diabetes. If overlooked, this condition can progress to diabetes, a chronic disease that could cause serious damage to many of the body’s systems, especially the nerves and blood vessels. Fortunately, there are many modifiable risk factors that can help prevent the progression of prediabetes. In this session, we will discuss the physiology involved in blood sugar regulation, how pre-diabetes occurs and how it could progress to Type 2 Diabetes, review recommendations for the prevention of Type II Diabetes, as well as discuss how poor glycemic control can impact weight management. This special topic will be run by our internist, Dr. Jeff Kerrie.
As a macronutrient, protein is a powerhouse! It serves numerous critical functions in our body and plays an important role in maintaining our overall health. In this session, we will explore the benefits of protein and discuss the importance of prioritizing an adequate protein intake, especially when creating a calorie deficit for weight loss. Whether it be maintaining our satiety, helping stabilize our blood sugars, or protecting our lean muscle tissue, this macronutrient is an incredibly valuable fuel source. Strategies for using cost-effective protein sources and ideas for incorporating more protein into your diet will be discussed.
